Professor Zhiyong Fan obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physical Electronics from Fudan University in 1998 and 2001, followed by his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of California, Irvine, in 2006. From 2007 to 2010, he served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, with a joint appointment with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Prof Fan joined HKUST in 2010 and he is currently a Chair Professor of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. Prof Fan also serves as the Co-director of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies and the Director of the Center on Smart Sensor and Environmental Technologies. His research focuses on rational design and fabrication of nanostructures, basic understanding of their physical and chemical properties and the utilization of these materials of the optoelectronics device applications.
Prof Fan has published nearly 210 peer-reviewed papers, with approximately 23,000 citations and an H-index of 90, earning recognition as a highly cited researcher. He holds around 30 patents in China and the U.S. and has co-founded two startups commercializing sensor technology. As a renowned scientist in nanomaterials and optoelectronics, Professor Fan has received numerous awards, including the HKUST Outstanding Young Researcher Award and several innovation and research accolades. He currently serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals.
